<\/p>\nI came home from work one afternoon and immediately noticed something strange between my house and my neighbor\u2019s yard.<\/p>\n
A fence.<\/p>\n
Well\u2026 technically, part of a fence.<\/p>\n
It was about three feet wide, six feet tall, and standing completely alone beside a giant tree.<\/p>\n
I stared at it for a full minute.<\/p>\n
There was no fence connected to it.<\/p>\n
No gate.<\/p>\n
No wall.<\/p>\n
Just five wooden boards protecting absolutely nothing.<\/p>\n
My neighbor, Mike, was standing nearby with a hammer, looking extremely proud of himself.<\/p>\n
I asked, \u201cMike\u2026 what are you building?\u201d<\/p>\n
He wiped the sweat from his forehead.<\/p>\n
\u201cA privacy fence.\u201d<\/p>\n
I looked to the left.<\/p>\n
Open yard.<\/p>\n
I looked to the right.<\/p>\n
More open yard.<\/p>\n
Then I looked back at him.<\/p>\n
\u201cPrivacy from what?\u201d<\/p>\n
Mike pointed at my house.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n
I nearly dropped my groceries.<\/p>\n
\u201cMike\u2026 I can literally walk around it.\u201d<\/p>\n
He became quiet.<\/p>\n
Then he slowly looked at both sides of his masterpiece.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI haven\u2019t finished yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fair enough.<\/p>\n
The next morning, I went outside expecting to see the rest of the fence.<\/p>\n
Nothing.<\/p>\n
The tiny fence was still standing alone.<\/p>\n
Three days passed.<\/p>\n
Still nothing.<\/p>\n
A week passed.<\/p>\n
Still nothing.<\/p>\n
Finally, I asked Mike when he planned to finish it.<\/p>\n
He looked confused.<\/p>\n
\u201cFinish what?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fence.\u201d<\/p>\n
He looked at the wooden boards.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh. That IS finished.\u201d<\/p>\n
That was when I realized my neighbor might be building the most useless fence in America.<\/p>\n
But the reason he built it was even stranger.<\/p>\n
A few days later, I was outside drinking coffee when I saw Mike standing behind the tiny fence.<\/p>\n
Not beside it.<\/p>\n
Behind it.<\/p>\n
He was eating a sandwich.<\/p>\n
I could see almost his entire body.<\/p>\n
Only about 20% of him was hidden.<\/p>\n
He noticed me looking.<\/p>\n
Then he quickly moved closer to the fence.<\/p>\n
I said, \u201cMike, I can still see you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, you can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, I can.\u201d<\/p>\n
He moved two inches to the left.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow about now?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cStill yes.\u201d<\/p>\n
He sighed.<\/p>\n
Apparently, Mike had built the fence because his wife told him she wanted \u201cmore privacy in the backyard.\u201d<\/p>\n
Instead of building a fence around the yard like a normal person, Mike had decided to build one small section wherever they needed privacy.<\/p>\n
Basically, it was a portable wall.<\/p>\n
His wife wanted to sit outside?<\/p>\n
Mike moved the fence beside her chair.<\/p>\n
She wanted to garden?<\/p>\n
The fence moved to the garden.<\/p>\n
She wanted to sunbathe?<\/p>\n
Mike dragged the fence across the yard again.<\/p>\n
At this point, I started calling it \u201cThe Privacy Shield.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mike hated that name.<\/p>\n
But things got even funnier when we had strong wind one afternoon.<\/p>\n
I heard a huge crash outside.<\/p>\n
I ran into the yard.<\/p>\n
The privacy fence had fallen over.<\/p>\n
And underneath it was Mike.<\/p>\n
Only his legs were sticking out.<\/p>\n
I rushed over.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you okay?!\u201d<\/p>\n
From underneath the fence, I heard:<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t tell my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n
I started laughing so hard I could barely lift the boards.<\/p>\n
But when his wife came outside, she didn\u2019t laugh.<\/p>\n
She looked at Mike.<\/p>\n
Then she looked at the fence.<\/p>\n
Then she said:<\/p>\n
\u201cI told you to hire someone.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mike looked at me.<\/p>\n
I looked at him.<\/p>\n
Neither of us said a word.<\/p>\n
That night, however, something happened that made the little fence surprisingly useful.<\/p>\n
Around midnight, I heard a strange noise outside.<\/p>\n
Bang.<\/p>\n
Scratch.<\/p>\n
Bang.<\/p>\n
I looked through the window and saw movement near the tiny fence.<\/p>\n
For a second, I thought someone was trying to break into the house.<\/p>\n
I grabbed my flashlight and slowly walked outside.<\/p>\n
Mike came out too.<\/p>\n
He whispered, \u201cDid you hear that?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n
We carefully walked toward the fence.<\/p>\n
Something moved behind it.<\/p>\n
Mike jumped backward.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is that?!\u201d<\/p>\n
Suddenly, a raccoon popped its head out.<\/p>\n
Mike screamed.<\/p>\n
Not a normal scream.<\/p>\n
A full horror-movie scream.<\/p>\n
The raccoon screamed too.<\/p>\n
I screamed because Mike screamed.<\/p>\n
For about five seconds, three grown creatures were standing in the backyard yelling at each other.<\/p>\n
Then the raccoon ran away.<\/p>\n
Mike\u2019s wife opened the window.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is happening?!\u201d<\/p>\n
Mike pointed at the tiny fence.<\/p>\n
\u201cA BURGLAR!\u201d<\/p>\n
I said, \u201cMike\u2026 it was a raccoon.\u201d<\/p>\n
His wife stared at him.<\/p>\n
\u201cA raccoon?\u201d<\/p>\n
Mike stood up straight.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes. A dangerous one.\u201d<\/p>\n
The next morning, Mike added a small sign to the fence:<\/p>\n
SECURITY WALL<\/strong><\/p>\n I laughed every time I walked past it.<\/p>\n Then something unexpected happened.<\/p>\n Another neighbor saw the fence and asked Mike if he could build one for him too.<\/p>\n Then another person asked.<\/p>\n Within a month, Mike had sold six \u201cportable privacy walls.\u201d<\/p>\n He even added handles so people could move them around.<\/p>\n One afternoon, I watched him load two of them into a truck.<\/p>\n I said, \u201cMike, are you actually making money from this?\u201d<\/p>\n He smiled.<\/p>\n \u201cYep.\u201d<\/p>\n I shook my head.<\/p>\n \u201cSo the useless fence wasn\u2019t useless?\u201d<\/p>\n Mike pointed at me.<\/p>\n \u201cNever doubt innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n Then his wife shouted from inside the house:<\/p>\n \u201cMIKE!
